American Heart Association 2013 Heart Walk in Birmingham, Alabama

I walked in the 2013 American Heart Association Heart Walk 5k last Saturday along with a hundred or so other St. Vincent’s associates. Our team raised $ 46,000 for the AHA!

When I signed up for this walk, there was a “walking in honor of” field for me to fill in. I quickly skipped over the field because I didn’t really have a person in mind. Actually, I never really pay attention to heart disease and the American Heart Association because I’ve never lost someone to heart disease and I don’t have a heart problem.

Sadly, a couple of weeks ago, one of my Facebook friends passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack. I’ve had him on my mind since his passing. This gentleman looks like he was in his late thirties (his birthday was yesterday), and he left behind a very young daughter (approximately six years old.)

His death has bothered me because he reached out to me via Facebook for help with weight loss, and I never found time to Skype with him. We did send messages back and forth on Facebook. Anyway, I feel guilty about not spending more time with him.

I can tell by the outpouring of support from his friends and relatives on his Facebook wall, that he was a fun, special person that is going to be missed for a long, long time. This gentleman was a talented photographer that lived in Miami, and his portfolio includes such celebrities as Celine Dion and Usain Bolt. I really looked forward to one day going down to Miami and meeting this gentleman.

I did tear up a little bit during the Heart Walk. I pray and wish the best for this gentleman’s family and friends. I walked in honor of Prescott McDonald.
