Five great reasons to consume cocoa and chocolate

  1. The fatty acids in cocoa consists mainly of stearic acid and oleic acid. Unlike most saturated fatty acids, stearic acid does not raise blood cholesterol levels (not that we care about blood cholesterol levels, but maybe it will help keep your doctor from needlessly freaking out on you). Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fat that also does not raise cholesterol and may even reduce it.
  2. Contains flavonoids (procyanidins and epicatechins). These are part of a group of powerful antioxidants known as polyphenols. They are found in a variety of foods including dark chocolate, tea, red wine, and various fruits and vegetables.

What you need to know about cholesterol—Total and LDL

This is an area in which I will be guilty of oversimplification. But even oversimplified, it will vastly outstrip your doctor’s focus on total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and statin drugs. Unfortunately, most doctors have fallen for the marketing disguised as statin drug “research,” paid for by the drug industry. Statin drugs do indeed provide a very small benefit—but with substantial health (and financial) costs.

The Truth About Hypoglycemia

Many people who experience uncomfortable, even dangerous, episodes of low blood sugar–hypoglycemia–are told to drink juice or eat something sweet to bring blood sugar back up. This is VERY BAD ADVICE that takes you closer and closer to diabetes, especially since people who experience this effect are at high-risk for type 2 diabetes and are often already pre-diabetic.

Virtually all hypoglycemia is preceded by HYPERglycemia, i.e., high blood sugar. The solution is therefore to not chase low blood sugars, but to not allow high blood sugars to occur in the first place.
