“Don’t eat anything white”

I’ve heard this advice countless times, as I’ll bet you have, too. I’ve also witnessed many people try it (though certainly not on my advice), only to experience modest (if any) benefits that quickly come a halt. And, of course, this advice makes no sense.

Calcium Supplements— Don’t waste your money

Calcium supplements have no role in the Undoctored/Wheat Belly lifestyle. For years, doctors have advised people to supplement calcium to prevent bone thinning and osteoporotic fractures based on the simple reasoning that if something is lacking, taking more of it must be the solution. But clinical trials have repeatedly demonstrated virtually no benefit with calcium supplementation— no slowing of bone thinning, no reduction of osteoporotic fractures.

Likewise, people who consume plentiful dairy products containing calcium do not have better bone health. One thing that people who supplement calcium do have is more death from heart disease. It should be a familiar theme by now: Not only has conventional advice not worked, it is responsible for causing health problems.

Fat People Still Have To Eat, And Sometimes I Don’t Want Salad

Right now I’m sitting in a hipster coffee shop drinking a latte that was so pretty that I didn’t want to touch it. They serve the biggest, most ridiculous doughnuts I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been to some pretty ridiculous doughnut shops. The lattes here are too delicious to express with words, and on this day of rest, I decided to indulge in (part of) a doughnut. They’re so big that if I tried to eat it all I’d probably end up at the emergency room, or maybe I’d just feel sick. I don’t intend to find out. I spend a lot of time sharing my thoughts and ideas – on social media, here on the blog and in person with friends and family. I’m honest about my journey, struggles and victories, and it helps me keep track of where I’ve been and where I’m going. Being as open as I am also invites judgement, sometimes even from well-meaning people who just don’t have a clue. I like food…sushi, cookies, lattes, etc. Sometimes I eat that stuff, and if I’m eating something pretty I’m probably going to post it on Instagram. I’m as open about that as I would be about posting […]

Don’t Let Grains Ruin Your Skin.

Grains can play havoc with your skin. The prolamin proteins, such as gliadin, trigger autoimmune skin reactions and turn antibodies against the skin enzymes, their lectins fan the fires of inflammation, their proteins provoke allergies, and their amylopectins send blood sugar and insulin sky-high and provoke the skin-disrupting hormone insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF). The whole grain package adds up to an impressive collection of skin conditions that can take a variety of forms, from simple red, itchy rashes to scaly, oily raised patches to large vesicles to gangrene. Because hair and nails are also considered part of the integumentary system, they, too, can be involved.
