Smoke low-tar cigarettes? The fatal flaw in logic of nutritional studies

Screen Shot 2016-06-16 at 9.09.28 AMJust because something bad is reduced or eliminated in cigarettes, it should not logically follow that cigarettes must now be good, right? Low-tar, filtered cigarettes may be less harmful than full-tar, unfiltered cigarettes, but still contain heavy metals like mercury, lead, and cadmium, as well as nicotine, naphthalene, arsenic, formaldehyde, ammonia and other toxic compounds. Low- or no-tar does NOT mean healthy. This may seem obvious, but it is surprising how many people—physicians and dietitians included—fall for such flawed logic when applied to nutrition.

When to take Wheat Belly nutritional supplements

Alarm Clock in flat vector illustrationI’ve gotten a number of questions over the timing of taking the supplements advocated in the Wheat Belly lifestyle. So let’s talk about this issue. It’s actually quite simple.

Probiotic–Timing is unimportant. It’s also unclear whether they can or should be taken with food or on an empty stomach, as there are no clear data on this. So, until we have clarification, take it any old time. The only precaution is that it is probably best to not take your probiotic with anything really hot, e.g., coffee, as some species are heat-sensitive and will not survive. It is probably best to not take your probiotic at the same time as iodine, as iodine is an effective antimicrobial and may kill off some of the probiotic species.

Why nutritional supplements on the Wheat Belly lifestyle?

Confused DPC

Some people following the Wheat Belly lifestyle have asked this question: “If I eat real, whole foods rich in nutrients, why do I need nutritional supplements?”

It’s a valid question. After all, after the phytates of grains are removed that previously prevented the absorption of magnesium, iron, zinc, and calcium, and healing of the gastrointestinal tract ensues with removal of the bowel toxins intrinsic to grains, nutritional status improves in most people. You can even track this by, for instance, measuring ferritin levels (that reflect iron stores in the body) and watching them climb over the months after rejecting all wheat and grains.

Depression: Why not START with a nutritional solution?

If you experience depression, you will typically be prescribed an antidepressant, an SSRI or other agent. If you consult a psychologist or counselor, the underlying psychological underpinnings (if any) are explored, strategies devised to cope. But there will almost never be talk about your diet, nutritional deficiencies that amplify dark moods, the life habits that allow demons to emerge.

Yet there are some very powerful strategies available that have potential to substantially lift mood. Such solutions won’t, of course, erase the effects of childhood trauma or grieving from personal loss, but they can help smooth the emotional impact of such life events, elevate the hormones of mood, and make life easier easily and naturally.
